Combatting Loneliness: MOVEability’s Big Christmas Lunch & The Power of Social Connection

Older people socialising

October 1st, the International Day of Older Persons, is a powerful reminder that while physical health is vital, social connection is the true key to well-being.

At MOVEability, our classes have always been about much more than just seated chair exercise. They are a lifeline against social isolation, a place where friendship and laughter are just as important as improved flexibility and strength. Our community is built on a simple yet profound premise: everyone deserves a welcoming place to belong.

The Big Christmas Lunch: A Community-Driven Solution

The idea for the Big Christmas Lunch was born directly out of this commitment to social connection. We recognised that while our weekly classes build momentum, we needed a special event to elevate that connection and ensure our participants—many of whom live alone—don’t face the festive season in isolation.

As a big part of MOVEability is the community and social connection, this lunch is a chance to maintain and celebrate that social momentum, taking the socialising and interaction to another level whilst having fun. Social gatherings are important for mental well-being, enjoying each other’s company, and sharing experiences with like-minded people.

The launch of this lunch also created a wonderful opportunity to involve the entire MOVEability community in fundraising efforts, from tombolas at the Thatcham fun day to our latest campaigns. This shared effort not only secures the funds needed but, more importantly, fosters a beautiful sense of belonging among everyone involved.

Debbie Mumford’s Vital Role and Soaring Commitment

This entire project has been driven by the incredible dedication of our instructor and community champion, Debbie Mumford.

MOVEability founder, Debbie Medlin, shares the background of their collaboration:

“Debbie and I met just over a year ago at a networking event… we ended up sitting next to each other, talking and being absolutely astounded at how much we had in common—and the rest is history. Upon joining the MOVEability team, Debbie quickly realised how heavily we rely on funding to keep the classes going. However, during one of our many chats, we got talking about what we could do to pull the community together, and that’s how the idea of the BIG MOVEability Christmas lunch was born. The generosity of gifts from clients, friends, and family for the Thatcham fun day tombola and raffle is a testament to her as a person and to her dedication.”

The Ultimate Fundraiser: Paragliding for Connection

Debbie Mumford’s commitment is perhaps best illustrated by her latest incredible challenge: on October 10th, in honour of World Mental Health Day, she will be taking to the skies on a paraglider to raise money for the Big Christmas Lunch. This isn’t just an adventure; it’s a mission to combat loneliness.

In Debbie Mumford’s own inspiring words: “This Christmas, nobody should feel alone. That’s why I’m raising funds to host a free Christmas dinner for the MOVEability community, including our wonderful class participants, especially those who find themselves alone, carers, our instructors, and other helpers—a place where so many have found friendship and support. Donations are, of course, welcome from within our community as well as beyond.”

How You Can Help

Big plans are coming together for The Big Christmas Lunch, including the possibility of The Great Christmas Raffle. Every contribution ensures we can provide a warm, festive, and social meal for those in the MOVEability community who need it most.

Any contributions are appreciated, whether financial support for Debbie’s paragliding effort, or donations for the lunch itself—such as Christmas crackers, table clothes, little Christmas drink cheer, or prizes for the raffle.

Show your support by donating to Debbie Mumford’s fundraising page today and help us create a Big Christmas Lunch to remember!
